ASTM D1708-13 Tensile Properties of Plastics by Use of Microtensile Specimens
ASTM D1708-13 covers the determination of comparative tensile strength and elongation properties of plastics in the Microtensile form. This method can be used for specimens with thickness up to 3.2 mm, including films. Performing this test method is used for comparative data to ASTM D638, however this test method cannot be used for determination of modulus of elasticity.
For this test, we used a Model 3345 Electromechanical system with a 225 lb load cell. We found that 225 lb mechanical wedge grips work well for stiffer plastic specimens. However, for thinner more flexible microtensile specimens, we found that pneumatic side action grips are preferred. In addition, a webcam was set up to track specimen failure. The images from the webcam were recorded into Instron's Bluehill® 3 software. This enables the user to view the test data along with a video of the actual live test.
