Tensile Testing of Metallic Materials (GOST 1497)

This Russian standard establishes the static tension test requirements for ferrous and nonferrous metals of 3.0 mm and more in nominal diameter or minimum cross section size for the determination of one or more mechanical properties, s uch as Young’s Modulus, Proof Stress and Ultimate Tensile Strength.

For testing metals in accordance with GOST 1497 , we chose a SATEC™ Series 600LX static hydraulic testing machine with hydraulic wedge action grips and an M300B Automatic Extensometer. The LX Models feature an ergonomic working height and large testing space making it easy for operators to load and unload samples quickly and safely. Other important features include: load accuracy of ±0.5% of indicated load; 500 Hz synchronous data acquisition for all channels; specimen protect; and superior load frame design featuring optional high resolution position encoder. Designed for high productivity and safe operation, the grips are fully front loading with easy-to-change jaw faces.

We chose the M300B extensometer because it is automatically controlled with Partner™ Software and Instron electronics. The gauge length can be set from 10 mm (0.39 in) to the maximum possible length of 300 mm (11.81 in) and has selectable, (very) high resolution of 0.1 μm (3.937 E -06 in) or 1 μm (3.937 E -05 in). This increases the accuracy of testing and saves the user time as it limits mistakes that can be made by manually attaching and removing a typical clip-on extensometer. Partner™ materials testing software provided all the necessary control parameters and calculation algorithms to satisfy the test standard.

We recommend reading and reviewing GOST 1497 in order to fully understand the test set up, procedures, and results requirements.
